Day in the Life: Capturing the Space Needle Pride Flag Raising from the Air

Some locations carry weight before you ever launch a drone.
The Space Needle is one of them.

By the time most people arrived to celebrate, we had already been on site for hours, because in drone production, success is decided long before the aircraft ever leaves the ground.

5:30 AM: Coffee, Gear Check, and the Drive into Seattle

The day started the way many Washington workdays do. Coffee to go from one of Washington’s iconic drive-through coffee huts, gear double checked, batteries verified, and weather reviewed one more time.

From Kirkland, we loaded up the Jeep and headed into the heart of Seattle.

The mission was clear. Capture aerial footage of the Space Needle Pride Flag Raising Ceremony and support additional promotional requests if needed.

How we executed would depend entirely on what we found on site.

Early Arrival: Building the Plan on Location

Because this was a live event at one of Seattle’s most recognized landmarks, we arrived several hours early.

There was no opportunity for advance physical scouting, so we had to solve several things in real time:

  • Safe and authorized takeoff location

  • Airspace positioning that allowed clean shots of the Space Needle

  • Crowd safety and operational perimeter planning

  • Sun positioning to avoid harsh glare and blown highlights

  • Coordination with our client, Space Needle public relations, and on-site security

After walking the area and evaluating potential flight paths, we identified a location that allowed safe operations, strong sight lines, and minimal disruption to the event flow.

We established our operational perimeter with cones, staged equipment, powered up drones, and began system checks.

Throughout setup, we remained in active communication with both our client and the Space Needle public relations team.

Coordination with Space Needle PR and Security

Once the Space Needle team arrived, we met in person to align on final logistics and confirm authorization with on-site security.

Filming at major landmarks requires coordination, documentation, and professionalism. We had all required permitting and documentation on hand and ready to present.

During this coordination, we received an additional request. The Space Needle had just debuted their new two-tier elevator experience, and they wanted promotional footage captured for future use if possible.

That meant expanding our shot strategy in real time.

Technical Prep: Testing Before the Moment That Cannot Be Repeated

Live events happen once. There are no reshoots.

During lead-up time, we ran multiple test captures to ensure we were ready:

  • Long-distance flight tests to verify battery performance

  • Wide orbital shots around the Space Needle to evaluate light and contrast

  • Vertical tracking tests to match elevator movement speed

  • Exposure adjustments for reflective surfaces and sky balance

This is where professional drone production separates from hobby flying. Every test flight reduces risk when the real moment happens.

The Ceremony: One Shot, Real Time, Real Emotion

When the Pride Flag Raising Ceremony began, we transitioned to primary capture mode.

We followed the selected group ascending to the top of the Space Needle. These were the clients who had hired us to document their moment with the Pride flag at one of Seattle’s most iconic landmarks.

We maintained stable hover positions and smooth cinematic movement while they celebrated, took photos, and experienced the moment together.

For about an hour, we captured aerial video of:

  • The Pride flag and ceremony activity

  • The crowd and Seattle skyline backdrop

  • The Space Needle structure in optimal light

  • The authentic emotional energy of the celebration

An unexpected highlight was the reaction from visitors inside the Space Needle. Tourists waved at the drone as it passed, creating authentic, joyful footage that cannot be staged.

The Result: More Than Footage

The final result was stunning aerial video of the Space Needle on a clear Seattle day, plus expanded footage of the new elevator experience for future promotional use.

Equally important were the relationships built that day. We established a strong working connection with the Space Needle team and demonstrated our ability to operate professionally in complex, high-visibility environments.
